Global Warming and Climate Wars
"About 2 years ago I noticed that the military in various countries, and especially in the Pentagon, were beginning to take climate change seriously. Now, it's the business of the military to find new security threats. It's also in their own self-interest, since they need a constant supply of threats in order to justify their demands on the taxpayers' money, so you should always take the new threats that the soldiers discover with a grain of salt. You know, never ask the barber whether you need a haircut.
But I did start to look into this idea that global warming could lead to wars. It turned into a year-long trek talking to scientists, soldiers and politicians in a dozen different countries. I have come back from that trip seriously worried, and there are four things I learned that I think you ought to know."

Wikileaks cracks NATO's Master Narrative for Afghanistan
Wikileaks has cracked the encryption to a key document relating to the war in Afghanistan. The document, titled "NATO in Afghanistan: Master Narrative", details the "story" NATO representatives are to give to, and to avoid giving to, journalists.
The encrypted document, which is dated October 6, and believed to be current, can be found on the Pentagon Central Command (CENTCOM) website oneteam.centcom.mil. [UPDATE: Fri Feb 27 15:18:38 GMT 2009, the entire Pentagon site is now down--probably in response to this editorial, parts of the site can still be seen in google's cache]

Mossad Link Found to One of Key 9-11 Hijackers
A NEW ISRAELI CONNECTION to the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001 has recently been unveiled. Buried in a New York Times story on Feb. 19 was the eye-opening revelation that a Lebanese Muslim Arab who has been taken into custody by the Lebanon—which has accused him of being a spy for some 25 years for Israeli intelligence—just happens to be a cousin of one of the Muslims alleged to have been one of the 9-11 hijackers.
Although Ali al-Jarrah was—publicly—an outspoken proponent of the Palestinian cause, it now turns out that he was actually working as a paid asset of the Mossad for more than two decades, betraying his own nation and conducting spying operations against Palestinian groups and the pro-Palestinian party Hezbollah.

As Obama launches "war on terrorism" II
I see that the Pentagon has reversed its old policy of refusing to allow photographs of those flag-draped coffins as our dead soldiers return from the battlefield. One wonders, however, how much interest there will be in taking and publishing such photos now that President Barack Obama is in office. One also wonders how long it will take the media to acknowledge the new quagmire we're sinking into if and when the numbers of casualties start increasing – as they are sure to do.
After all, Obama's war is going to be taking place on a much larger, more difficult canvas than that of his predecessor's, which was confined in large part to Iraq. All of Afghanistan will soon be teeming with newly-arrived US soldiers, sent there – direct from Iraq – to fulfill the President's pledge to start fighting the "right war" in the right way, a "smart" way. Oh, these guys (and gals) are the Best and the Brightest, alright, aren't they?

The Good Empire
An excellent five-video series of a Russian documentary on what drives US foreign policy and how the CIA is used as a weapon globally to destabilize and destroy governments that do not serve US interests.
It observes that the overthrow of Iranian Premier, Mossadeq, was the mother of all CIA-instigated 'color revolutions' leading all the way to Georgia and the Ukraine.
Highly recommended.
The Totalitarianizing of Britain: Now, Senior Police Officers are trying to frighten People off protesting about Climate Change
Hartshorn is one of several senior officers who have, in the past months, attempted to frighten people into not protesting about climate change.
The police are supposed to operate on evidence, not on febrile imaginations. Hartshorn's comments are yet more evidence, as former MI5 head Stella Rimington put it, that people in the UK are made to feel that they "live in fear and under a police state". The 1 April protest will be about carbon markets, taking climate change seriously and, it seems, democracy itself.

Who are the Real Criminals?
As our civil liberties are eroded and ordinary citizens become criminals, we let the real criminals of the moment walk free. Earlier this month, Washington's new director of national intelligence, retired Admiral Dennis Blair, testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
He warned that the deepening economic crisis posed perhaps our gravest threat to stability and national security than Al-Qaeda or the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The real terrorists are not those who organise humanitarian trips to Gaza, but are the bankers from Wall Street and the city of London whose recklessness has plunged the western world into its greatest depression for a hundred years.

War Crimes and being on the Wrong Side of History
By refusing to publish the Cabinet Minutes prior to the 2003 attack on Iraq, The UK's Justice Minister, Jack Straw, as good as admitted the Cabinet's culpability in an illegal, international war crime.
But war crimes, it turns out, are only committed by the West's political enemies. It is simply impossible that the upholders of freedom and democracy could ever be war criminals! The following article, Wrong Side of History, illustrates the western media's collusion in propagating this monstrous lie:
"It is now widely understood that the media on both sides of the Atlantic completely failed to hold governments to account in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq."
"Less talked about is the mainstream media's subsequent failure to accurately report on the continuing occupation of Iraq - in particular, the large, violent resistance that sprang up after the initial US-British assault in March 2003."
"The reason we find it so difficult to accept is because we are the bad guys this time. We have caused all this pain and suffering."
"If you go back to the Nuremberg principles, to commit aggressive war is the supreme crime. And what we did in Iraq is we committed aggressive war.
"Britain is as guilty as the United States. We are on the wrong side of history."

Coming Soon-- Riots in America?
The Guardian reports that "Britain is preparing for a summer of rage." Has President Obama failed to reinstate Posse Comitatus because he is expecting and preparing for riots in the USA?
I just spoke to a friend who knows someone who is trying to get out of the military because they are training returning troops for riot control to take over US cities and he doesn't want to be a soldier dealing with US citizens.

The Fifth Annual Israeli Apartheid Week March 1 - 8, 2009
Mark your calendars - the 5th Annual Israeli Apartheid Week will take place across the globe from March 1-8, 2009!
First launched in Toronto in 2005, IAW has grown to become one of the most important global events in the Palestine solidarity calendar. Last year, more than 25 cities around the world participated in the week's activities, which also commemorated 60 years since the expulsion of the Palestinian people from their homes and land in 1947-1948. IAW 2008 was launched with a live broadcast from the South African township of Soweto by Palestinian leader and former member of the Israeli Knesset, Azmi Bishara.
This year, IAW occurs in the wake of Israel's barbaric assault against the people of Gaza. Lectures, films, and actions will make the point that these latest massacres further confirm the true nature of Israeli Apartheid. IAW 2009 will continue to build and strengthen the growing Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement at a global level.

Afghanistan: What are We doing There?
As President Obama announces the sending of a further 17 thousand US troops into Afghanistan and British TV continues an incessant propaganda justifying our presence there --the 'War on Terror'-- the question needs to be asked: why are British soldiers involved in an imperialist venture launched as a revenge-attack by the cretin, Bush? And what is NATO --the North Atlantic Treaty Organization-- doing policing and occupying a country in central Asia?
To put it in a nutshell: it's all about geopolitics, the stuff about the 'War on Terror' is no more than the justification which provides the propaganda behind what is in effect a twenty-first century, imperialist resource war.
In fact the much-vaunted "War against Terrorism" is really the ongoing World War of western capitalism that replaced the Cold War, a time during which "hot" wars were exported to places like Korea and Vietnam, with the idea of "Endless War", which is really an unending war based on geostrategic needs to grab as much of the Planet's mineral resources as possible.Afghanistan: The Dollar Line
Readers are advised to read my article, Afghanistan: The Dollar Line, first published in December 2007. The article goes into the geostrategic importance of Afghanistan to the West and why it has secured its occupation in what is envisaged will be a long-term presence.
Yet it is now commonly recognized --though rarely admitted-- by the USUK that it is a war that it cannot win, with the resistance from the Taleban steadily increasing. So what is Obama playing at with this new surge of troop deployment supported by the US' sidekick and vassal-state, Britain?
If this is a war that cannot be won then what else can explain the West's imperialist adventure in a country which has always defeated those who sought to control it? Occupation of a strategic resource in an endless war appears to be the answer. That keeps other interests such as those of Russia and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization at bay. And like Vietnam, Afghanistan provides the USUK Military-Industrial Complex with a never-ending source for weapons production and massive subsidies from their taxpayers.
Meantime, thousands of innocents die in a high-tech massacre along with hundreds of the USUK's soldiers. The po-faced politicians hide behind a hypocrisy of concern for the loss of 'our boys and girls' whereas they really don't give a damn about it. As usual, the media hide the truth from our populations and the public are predictably mystified and disturbed about it all.
Which leaves us bloggers to do the job of questioning and challenging our rulers and their servile media. Is this what the much-vaunted 'special relationship' is really about, that our rulers must always and unquestioningly do what they're told by the US? Is this how corrupted these rulers have become? And is this something that we Brits are prepared to continue living with as this Island slides inexorably towards totalitarianism?

Former MI5 Chief finally gets it
THE former head of MI5 last night finally twigged that thing the rest of us realised about seven years ago.
Dame Stella Rimington said the government was exploiting the public's fear of terrorism to restrict civil liberties, before pointing out that Top of the Pops isn't on anymore either.
She told a Spanish newspaper: "I was having a cup of tea and a scone when it suddenly occurred to me - all these things they're doing might not be about terrorism after all.
"Maybe, right, they're just trying to scare us, yeah?… so we'll let them take away our freedom, yeah?… all the while believing that it's really for our own good... d'you see?
"Then it all just totally clicked into place. Introducing ID cards will do nothing to stop bombs. Giving the police the power to arrest you because you have a beard will do nothing to stop bombs.
"Restricting freedom of speech and locking up brown people without trial will do nothing to stop bombs.
"And what the bloody hell's happened to Top of the Pops?"
Dame Stella added: "Admittedly it might have been better if I'd realised all of this a tad earlier. But not to worry, now that I'm just an ordinary citizen I can really do something about it."

Constitution Battered by War on Terror, Says Lawyers Group
WASHINGTON -- Due process and privacy guaranteed under the U.S. constitution, open government, and respect for human rights around the world are taking a battering from the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush in prosecuting its "war on terrorism," according to a new report released today by a leading international human rights group.
"The U.S. government can no longer promise that individuals under its authority will be subject to a system bound by the rule of law," according to the report by the New York-based Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (LCHR). "In a growing number of cases, legal safeguards are now observed only so far as they are consistent with the chosen ends of power."

Europe in revolt: people power vs corporate crisis
Europe has all but exploded into the new year with a growing fightback against the policies that caused economic crisis across the continent. Millions of protesters are beginning to take on those responsible for the capitalist meltdown.
Ian Traynor, the Europe editor of the Guardian, summed up the new developments on January 31: “Europe’s time of troubles is gathering depth and scale. Governments are trembling. Revolt is in the air.”

'War on Terror' illegal says International Commission
A three-year global study by the International Commission of Jurists says that the UK and the US have "actively undermined" international law in the way they fight terrorism.
"It concluded that many measures introduced to fight terrorism were illegal and counter-productive."
The report comes just days after the latest police outrage in which a Palestine Aid convoy was stopped on the M65 motorway, nine members of the convoy were arrested under the Terrorism Act and kept hand-cuffed for six hours before six were released with no charge though their cellphones and passports were witheld.
The repeated abuse of the Terrorism Act is just one case in point which reflects the ICJ's findings. An earlier article below highlights the fact that in 2008 where the UK police used Section 44 of the Act to stop and search 360,000 people, not one was later charged.
"The ICJ report recommended an urgent review of counter-terrorism laws and policies to prevent serious and permanent damage to fundamental human rights principles."
This repeated abuse of the terror laws by the police is very much what the new report is about. But left to itself it is highly unlikely that the government will pay very much attention or make any effort to stop the abuse. Only a concerted public campaign is likely to have any effect. Conversely, in its absence the abuses will simply continue to multiply in their numbers.
Viva Gaza!
A massive convoy of vehicles snaked its way out of London on Saturday bearing more than £1 million worth of aid for Gaza.
The Viva Palestina mission will travel 5,000 miles through France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, attempting to cross at Rafah in early March.

Palestine Solidarity Convoy Harassed by UK Police
A Viva Palestina Solidarity Convoy on its way to Gaza has been stopped by police in Preston, Lancashire. Nine people were arrested although six of those have now been reported to be released. Several houses in Burnley, Lancashire have been searched.
It is significant that British TV has reported this police action by either down-playing or omitting mention of the fact that a humanitarian, solidarity convoy had been stopped. Instead the incident has been reported as just another police action against terrorists.
On the face of it this latest incident looks to be nothing more than yet another case of police harassment against British Muslims. In 2008 UK police used Section 44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 to stop and search 360,000 people. Not one of these was found to possess terrorist material or to be linked to terrorism. Yet the harassment continues along with the full complicity of a media which downplays political and humanitarian solidarity and re-presents it to look like anti-terrorist action.
This latest totalitarian outrage by the UK police follows hard on the heels of the BBC's refusal to broadcast a humanitarian appeal on behalf of the people of Gaza.
George Galloway MP speaks on behalf of Gaza Convoy
Welcome to the crony capitalist convention
where New Labour got into bed with the bankers but we were the ones who got screwed
The absolutely disgusting thing about ‘New’ Labour/Old Tory is that awful creeps and war criminals like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and the rest of the ‘New’ Labour parasites were concerned only about power, gaining power that is and in order to do that it was necessary to toady up to Big Business and in the process stab millions of loyal Labour supporters in the back, buying them off with ‘cheap’ credit and the lure of a consumer paradise courtesy the sweatshops and slave factories of Asia and Latin America. Ye reap what ye sow.

Sign the Petition to try Tony Blair for War Crimes
To The President of The United Nations General Assembly, H.E. Father Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, and The Attorney General of the United Kingdom, and their successors in office.
RE ANTHONY CHARLES LYNTON BLAIR
We, the citizens of the United Kingdom and other countries listed, wish to uphold The United Nations Charter, The 1998 Rome Statute of The International Criminal Court, The Hague and Geneva Conventions and the Rule of International Law, especially in respect of:-
1: 1949 Geneva Convention IV: Article 146
The High Contracting Parties undertake to enact any legislation necessary to provide effective penal sanctions for persons committing, or ordering to be committed, any of the grave breaches of the present Convention.
2: 1907 Hague Convention IV: Article 3
A belligerent party which violates the provisions of the said regulations shall, if the case demands, be liable to pay compensation. It shall be responsible for all the acts committed by persons forming part of its armed forces.
We therefore call on you to indict Anthony Charles Lynton Blair in his capacity as recent Prime Minister of the UK, so long as he is able to answer for his actions and however long it takes, in respect of our sample complaints relating to the 2003 Iraq War waged by the UK as ally to the United States of America.
We are concerned that without justice and respect for the rule of law, the future for us and our progeny in a lawless world is bleak, as revealed by recent US declarations about the use of torture and the events of December 2008 in Gaza show.
The following are our sample complaints relating to the Iraq War 2003-2009:
1: Deceit and conspiracy for war, and providing false news to incite passions for war, causing in the order of one million deaths, 4 million refugees, countless maimings and traumas.
2: Employing radioactive ammunition causing long-term destruction of the planetary habitat.
3: Causing the breakdown of civil administration, with consequent lawlessness, especially looting, kidnapping, and violence, and consequent breakdown of womens’ rights, of religious freedom, and child and adult education.
4: Failing to maintain the medical needs of the populace.
5: Despoliation of the cultural heritage of the country.
6: Supporting an ally that employs ‘waterboarding’ and other tortures.
7: Seizing the assets of Iraq.
8: Using inhumane restraints on prisoners, including dogs, hoods, and cable ties.
9: Using Aggressive Patrolling indiscriminately, traumatising women and children and wrecking homes and property.
10: Marking bodies of prisoners with numbers, writing, faeces and other degrading treatment.
11: The use of cluster bombs and other indiscriminate weapons including white phosphorous on “shake and bake” missions.
12: Supporting indiscriminate rocket attacks from F16 fighter planes on women and children in Fallujah in Nov 2004
13: Supporting the shooting up of ambulances and medical personnel in Fallujah in Nov 2004
14: Supporting the expulsion of the entire population of Fallujah save for young men of military age, for a reprisal attack on that city in Nov 2004.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

Flirting with Free Speech or Abusing it?
The far-right Dutch Islamophobe, Geert Wilders, was today prevented from entering the UK. Wilders is part of a much wider group of Islamophobes on the Continent who whilst hiding behind the pretence of 'the right to exercise free speech' are calculatedly using that privilege to inflame and incite racial and religious hatred .
He is currently being investigated by the Dutch courts for using hate-speak. Wilders, a Dutch parliamentarian, is widely known for his campaign to have the Koran banned in Holland. He has also produced a video, Fitna, which seeks to link Islam with terrorism.
Wilders has been accused of flirting with free speech. Those who have made an investigation of the Islamophobes might disagree: the word 'flirtation' is far too gentle a description of the abuse which dangerous people like Wilders indulge in.
¡No Pasarán! Against Nazis Marching On 13th and 14th Of February 2009 In Dresden!
In the last ten years Nazis have established their biggest annual demonstration in Dresden.
Up to 6.000 Nazis propagate the bombing of Dresden as an"Allied Bombing Holocaust“.
While passing the synagogue they demand vengeance and retaliation.
The Mayor and local government continue to put restrictions on the antifascist resistance.
Nevertheless thousands of people continue to block the Nazi demonstration annually.
It is time for us to stop their demonstration and take back the streets!
We will not let the nazis lie about history!
No more war! No more Fascism!

"Oi Va Voi are a British band that takes its name from a Yiddish-derived exclamation popular in modern Hebrew meaning, approximately "Oh, dear!". It is an experimental band from London, England, which formed in the late 1990s. Their sound draws on Jewish music from both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic traditions, including both klezmer and Ladino music, as well as Eastern European, especially Hungarian folk music, as well as contemporary electronic music."

UK Minister fears Rise of Fascism amid Economic Gloom
Ed Balls, the Children's and Schools Secretary, said the downturn was likely to be the most serious for 100 years, and his comments appeared to raise the prospect of a return to the Far Right politics of the 1930s and the rise of Facism.
His warning, in a speech to activists at the weekend, came after a trade union baron warned that far right parties were trying to hijack the campaign for "British jobs for British workers".

Imperialist junkies
Geoff Simons charts the wars of a country bent on world domination.
The election of Barack Obama represents a seismic shift in US and world politics. The contrast with George Bush, a semi-dictator who ignored the constitution and pretended that he was a war leader in order to rule by diktat, is plain.
But even before Bush there were plenty of lies, torture and invasions.
Obama is trapped in a culture that regards military aggression and subversive operations as normal tactics.

If not fascism, what is?
Without censure, a growing current in Israeli politics is calling for the outright killing of Palestinians
His name is Avigdor Lieberman and he is widely expected to be the main surprise of the Israeli elections, slated to take place 10 February. Many Israeli intellectuals dub Lieberman as the secular equivalent of Meir Kahana, the slain founder of the Kach terrorist group who advocated genocidal ethnic cleansing of non-Jews in Israel-Palestine. Kahana was assassinated in Manhattan, New York, in 1990 shortly after giving a speech in which he called for the annihilation and expulsion of Palestinians from "the Land of Israel".

Secret police unit set up to spy on British 'domestic extremists'
A secret police intelligence unit has been set up to spy on Left-wing and Right-wing political groups.

Its job is to build up a detailed picture of radical campaigners.

Rory's Note: The fact that the CIU has been set up by the Association of Chief Police Officers should be noted as a further significant move in the politicisation of the UK police force. It is too often forgotten these days that the police are a civilian force whose primary job is to protect the public. Instead, the police have become increasingly militarised and politicised, two essentials in the creation of a totalitarian, police state.

World Social Forum: We won’t pay for the crisis. The rich must pay!
We the social movements from all over the world came together on the occasion of the 8th World Social Forum in Belém, Amazonia, where the peoples have been resisting attempts to usurp Nature, their lands and their cultures. We are here in Latin America, where over the last decade the social movements and the indigenous movements have joined forces and radically question the capitalist system from their cosmovision ...
The present system is based on exploitation, competition, promotion of individual private interests to the detriment of the collective interest, and the frenzied accumulation of wealth by a handful of rich people. It results in bloody wars, fuels xenophobia, racism and religious fundamentalisms; it intensifies the exploitation of women and the criminalisation of social movements ...
In order to overcome the crisis we have to grapple with the root of the problem and progress as fast as possible towards the construction of a radical alternative that would do away with the capitalist system and patriarchal domination. We must work towards a society that meets social needs and respects nature’s rights as well as supporting democratic participation in a context of full political freedom. We must see to it that all international treaties on our indivisible civic, political, economic, social and cultural rights, both individual and collective, are implemented. ...

The Way of Izvestia: BBC as a Metaphor for State Propaganda
'The BBC cannot be neutral in the struggle between truth and untruth, justice and injustice, freedom and slavery, compassion and cruelty, tolerance and intolerance.' Thus read a 1972 internal document called Principles and Practice in News and Current Affairs laying out the guidelines for the BBC's coverage of conflicts. It appears to affirm that in cases of oppression and injustice to be neutral is to be complicit, because neutrality reinforces the status quo. This partiality to truth, justice, freedom, compassion and tolerance it deems 'within the consensus about basic moral values'. It is this consensus that the BBC spurned when it refused to broadcast the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC)'s video appeal to help the people of Gaza.
The presumption that underlies the decision is that the BBC has always been impartial when it comes to Israel-Palestine. An exhaustive 2004 study by the Glasgow University Media Group – Bad News from Israel – shows that the BBC's coverage is systematically biased in favour of Israel. It excludes context and history to focus on day-to-day events; it invariably inverts reality to frame these as Palestinian 'provocation' against Israeli 'retaliation'. The context is always Israeli 'security', and in interviews the Israeli perspective predominates. There is also a marked difference in the language used to describe casualties on either side; and despite the far more numerous Palestinian victims, Israeli casualties receive more air time.

The politics of bollocks
Supporters of the new US president refuse to admit that the "man of change" is, in fact, changing very little. It's time the Obama lovers grew up.

Let banks fail, says Nobel economist Joseph Stiglitz
The Government should allow every distressed bank to go bankrupt and set up a fresh banking system under temporary state control rather than cripple the country by propping up a corrupt edifice, according to Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel Prize-winning economist.

New Map of Land Stolen by Israeli Settlers from Palestine
Mondo Exclusive: Google map of Israeli settlements from leaked database
The "Spiegel settlement database" is already creating waves in Israel. Israeli NGO Yesh Din has announced they will use the database to help Palestinians sue Israel for reparations and the removal of settlements from privately owned land...
...what the new leaked database reveals is that, in addition to taking control of all the public land that belongs to the Palestinian people and using it for Jews only, in addition to the million of dunums confiscated "legally" from private Palestinian owners, Israeli authorities also took some land from a few dozen owners without attention to legal niceties.

To my mind and, it appears, to millions of others, the BBC is increasingly biased towards Israel in this conflict
Thompson has been discredited and must resign. The BBC must reverse its decision and until it does, I urge a mass boycott of the corporation. We must do all we can to assist the people of Gaza, especially by isolating the Israeli military state through a complete economic, academic and cultural boycott. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu said: "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor."
